Frequently asked questions

Why do I need sound testing?

The revised building regulations were introduced in 2003 and aim to improve standards of acoustic insulation in attached properties. Residential developments, including new builds, conversions, hostels and hotels require a number of pre-completion tests to demonstrate compliance with these regulations.

As a developer, you are responsible for arranging sound insulation testing to demonstrate your compliance.

When is my site ready for testing?

Sound insulation tests are done when the development is pre-completed: we are usually on site just before the decorators get to work. For the best chance of passing the test the rooms in question should be as airtight as possible. Windows and doors should be fitted and functional. Ideally there should be a 240v power supply. Please let us know before our engineer arrives on site if power isn’t available so we can bring our whisper generator.

Should carpets be fitted?

The impact test should be carried out before the carpet is fitted, unless the floor is a 'Type 1' floor i.e concrete with a soft covering.

If carpets have already been fitted please contact us to discuss the available options.

What site conditions are needed for testing?

We need access to all rooms and will select the most suitable rooms for testing. We will need to schedule testing at a time when noise can be controlled (especially from trades activity) to ensure the best possible results.

Unfortunately tests do occasionally fail. This is usually the result an incorrectly specification or sadly poor workmanship.

Don’t worry we are here to help. We are a highly experience company and will work with you to find the most appropriate solution.
